Fire Code by State: 28 Build on the IFC, 14 on NFPA 1

By Fire Life and Safety Editorial TeamLast updated: October 19, 2026Review: pendingData checked: 2026-10-19

The fire code by state splits between two model codes: of the 50 states and DC, 28 build on the International Fire Code (IFC) and 14 build on NFPA 1. 3 states mix both, Texas has no statewide fire code, and for 5 states we could not confirm the code on an official page.

Who is on the newest editions

12 states show a 2024 edition in force: California, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming.

What changes when a state updates

A new edition can change inspection frequencies, who may perform tests and which records you keep. Local fire marshals usually enforce the new edition from the effective date, so check your state page when an update is announced.

Method

We read each state fire marshal or building code agency site where it was reachable, and cross-checked against the International Code Council adoption chart (April 2026). “Confirmed” means the edition was read on the state’s own page; “Partly confirmed” means the source was found but the edition or effective date was pending, conflicting or old. Local jurisdictions may adopt newer editions or amendments.

Requirements depend on the code edition your state and local fire marshal have adopted. Confirm with your authority having jurisdiction.
